I loved how the Paley Center would dedicate a night a week to each network’s new shows, giving me a chance to mainline them, often two or three weeks before they begin.

I feel compelled to watch each new show on broadcast (all the more so now that Derek has compelled me in my childlessness to do so!) 😉 but I can’t manage all of cable too … and I’m always haunted by the fact that pilots often feel and look different from anything else, so I also wonder if the best thing to do is watch episode 3 of every new show?

We’ve been enjoying catching up on all of Friday Night Lights for the past few weeks, but last night’s Survivor debut was a reminder of the tsunami of new TV coming up next week. I don’t try to sample everything, or even most shows; there’s simply not enough time, and way too many outlets to account for. So I gravitate towards shows that interest me in terms of genre, pedigree or novelty, and try to take those in.

That said, and you and every parent knows this very, very well: there’s only so much activity one can do between 8ish and 11ish pm (i.e., the only times you can watch anything at home). Nearly seven years into parenthood, and I still feel the addict’s itch for an all-day binge of DVR and DVD viewing on most weekend mornings. An itch which, alas, can never be satisfied, or at least not for the next decade or so. So if you’re not a parent, you have an obligation to watch all that we can’t, and we are grateful to you for that!
