I think that those of us outside the US (especially those of us who mainly study US TV) do think about some of these issues more than those within the US, but at the same time, I think that we still take a lot for granted. Television becomes a form of gloss, with a basic assumption that scheduling, representation, technology and a variety of other related ideas are all pretty much the same internationally. I think a lot of us could benefit from the type of experience you have had, especially if combined with the sort of self-reflection you have applied to it.

Americans only need look north – you know, that big vague space north of the 49th parallel that is conveniently left blank on US TV weather maps! – to Canada. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, or CBC, does a fantastic job, especially in radio. I can count on hearing cutting edge music, for example, first on CBC before it hits the popular media.
