Personally, I think UnREAL has more in common with BREAKING BAD than with SEX & THE CITY, but I have also argued that BB is a serial melodrama (and wouldn’t claim that SATC is), so my framework for the comparison is on different terms than what I think you’re getting at here.

Hope you enjoy the series!

I think you have raised some great points throughout in the discussion. To me, the move to consider this show (and its antiheroic protagonist) along the lines of Breaking Bad and other (male) Quality TV shows reminds me of the near-erasure of Sex in the City from the popular “Quality” canon. Emily Nussbaum raises a spirited defense in her piece “Difficult Women” http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/07/29/difficult-women, where she argues that Carrie Bradshaw was tv’s first female antihero. It just seems odd to me that the immediate move for critics is to look far afield instead of the genres that unReal is obviously drawing from.
