But it does help me to think about how the pro-casters are trying to figure out how to take advantage of advertising revenue while still maintaining the “public radio sound,” even when reading ad copy. Reply All had a good, if self-serving, piece on this very thing recently.

This basic division, between the “pros” and the “entrepreneurs” reminds me of what Cliff Doerksen wrote about in American Babel–the split in 1920s radio between those trying to make radio respectable (like ATT) and those scrappy independent stations run by entrepreneurs. When the history of podcasting is written, this event should be a useful one for understanding how these different approaches played out.
