It is a shame that Gary was unable to move beyond his childhood stardom. It seems cruel that society used Gary for entertainment as a kid and then abandoned him.

I wonder how many young stars of today look to Gary’s story as a cautionary tale.

Here was a guy who pretty much played by the rules and yet could never escape the anchor of his past. I mean, at 4″ 7″, he literally could not escape being Arnold. Undoubtedly, he was the victim of a society which still thinks short people (and particularly short people of color) are only to be ridiculed. He, like many sitcom stars, was a walking symbol of a particular moment in time long past yet always unavoidable.

RIP, Gary.
