Either way I was hooked immediately. Usually shows like this are filmed in some exotic location with crazy looking animals one only dreams of seeing, but the episode I saw this week had him hunting for sturgeon in Alaska. Still far away but not unthinkable.

(A catfish, it appears?)

I mean, come on, a well done animal show vs. The Marriage Ref would be an easy victory

I don’t tend to scan TV as much as I should, and am even worse when it comes to making appointments for things I “should” check out but won’t. I agree with you that it is somewhat surprising this stuff hasn’t made its way onto network. Red states and blue alike enjoy this type of what Bill Nichols dubs a “cinema of attractions.” And let’s not forget just how long the Beverly HIllbillies was number one. I grew up with Jacques Cousteau, but that wasn’t half as interesting as the sea monsters. Don’t have any explanation other than advertising (or the perception of “what is the market for this?”).
