Could this model be the future of local broadcasting rather than national network television? Like radio in the 1950s, local stations could leave network affiliation and go for the low production costs and relevant content that is responsive to local tastes?

But maybe not–broadcasting signals have geographic limits, so reinventing the local on radio made sense once TV became a national medium. Online media have no such signal range limitation. Hmmm, why have local “broadcasting” at all? Perhaps “local” really means niche tastes/interests, not geographical location, these days? In which case, this “cottage” model could possibly apply to just about anything?
