I can’t speak to audience demographics, other than both shows do really well in the 25-54 age group. Like you, I’d also be curious to know if Pawn Stars and Pickers are bringing in more of an upscale, educated, urban audience akin to that cultivated by cable nets like Bravo (my purely anecdotal assessment is that they are – and that’s surely not the standard History channel demo).

But the intro to the American Pickers alone is rich with allusions to “telling the history of America,” and it’s clear that that history resides in the rural plains, small towns, and out-of-the-way places, not on the coasts or in the big cities. At least in the scope of this specific show, there are some practical reasons for this: the kind of objects the Pickers are looking for aren’t likely to be found in those places, either because the high cost of land and a more transient population means that these artifacts aren’t likely to accumulate or because the people there know what they’ve got and aren’t willing to sell it for cheap (while never stated explicitly, the presumption is that it’s the monied city folks who are the collectors buying this stuff off the Pickers). Nevertheless, the stereotype of middle America as the Heartland is in full force, and likewise of the Heartland as being representative of a blue collar American way of life that is simpler, more straightfoward, and full of conviction.

It seems as though there might be more to this representation of the American midwest via the Pickers. I haven’t seen the program, so I can’t really comment beyond this, but it ‘feels’ like there might be something of interest in this image of these solitary individuals scouring the open spaces of middle America in search of lost treasures. The photo you’ve included seems to support this interpretation with the hosts holding up a rusty old bicycle against a distant horizon of flatlands and infinite sky. I would be interested in learning about who watches this show – is it popular in the midwest, or does it resonate with those in urban centers who might be looking to consume idealized images of the American heartland? In any event, this post provided me with some interesting food for thought.
