Oh, I’d argue the bigger anniversary this week was of Super Mario Bros., which single-handedly revived the console market in Japan and the US, as well as provided a revived template for a whole new loose genre of game (the side-scroller/platformer/etc.), significantly expanding what to that point had been pretty rudimentary (Activision’s Pitfall for the Atari VCS). Not to mention the impact the Mario franchise has across global culture in general — I believe an old survey in 1990 indicated that the youth of that era were more likely to recognize Mario than Mickey Mouse. Those youth now being, uh, the age of contributors to this blog!
