I’d also say that for people looking to publish a book, it’s worth considering the press’s attitudes toward fair use & open access if you’re in a position to be choosy. NYU’s reputation for innovation & openness made me want to work with them. Another book I’m co-editing had three presses who were interested in the project -we went with NYU again in large part because of their pro-faculty innovative attitude (and commitment to setting low price points, which is another form of accessibility). We actually turned down an offer from one of the GSU plaintiffs, and I told the editor that the press’s actions in this case was one of the reasons we decided not to go with them. That certainly didn’t deal a major blow to their bottom line, but it felt good to be able to assert my disagreement with some teeth.
