I have anecdotally seen evidence of queer fandom, for example there are several petition campaigns circulating around facebook. And in my discussions of the show with others that I know that watched it, I found that they at least saw it as campy, and most were intrigued as to the direction that the ‘bearded’ relationship might go.

Also, thanks for your comments Baerbel79, I am sure that the two things are actually related. That level of camp and queering of relationships would probably have been more tolerated if placed into a different show. The fact that this show was seen as an indictment of Christianity by many made the queer aspect all the more noticeable, in my opinion.

Thank you for this piece and while I had never thought of the queer aspect of the series and its viewership, but rather looked at the issues of depictions of religion and how every series not exclusively portraying religion as “heavenly bliss” has been pulled off the air quickly. Now I have another way to approach GCB, thank you.

I’ve been dismayed by the lack of discourse around the show, considering it was doing such interesting things with characters and institutions. I had a feeling that people didn’t quite know how to categorize it, and I think your application of queerness hits the nail on the head. Just curious if you had noticed any queer fandoms popping up around the show, despite its short season. Thanks again!
