Thanks for a thoughtful piece!

I would add a layer to your thinking, though: It’s interesting that, given the progression you mention, he is doing some strange genre-f**king (are we allowed to say that here?) in his late night CNN newscast, which presents itself as both a serious show before engaging in a segment they call Ridicu-list (which I’ve only seen twice: once when I watched this episode and the other time when everyone in the world watched that YouTube video of Anderson falling into a fit of giggles).

I really enjoyed reading it. I also think this “news” about the Silver Fox is interesting timing, not necessarily because of the ratings for his talk show, per se (which you do a great job addressing), but in terms of his career arc as a whole – as his career moved from news-centered CNN correspondent to host of his own evening CNN show to co-host of NYE specials w/ Kathy Griffin to a syndicated daytime talk show, it’s an interesting progression in the construction of his persona from “objective journalist” (ironic scare quotes intended) to a more subjectivity-on-display type of “television personality.”

It seems that his reporting on Katrina is a significant turning point, where his display of personal emotion as a correspondent was socially acceptable in a way that disrupted the idealized norms of anchor objectivity without overtly critiquing the irony of the system. As a physically attractive grey-haired man, he at once brought a kind of traditional levity that coded his teary-eyed, choked up reporting from New Orleans as a perfectly acceptable response for any human being witnessing that reality as opposed to an “overly emotional, too personally involved, unduly subjective” critique that might have been levied against correspondents of other genders, races, or ages. And that worked for him in a way that seemed to increase his popularity and open his career path. ANyway, all that is to say Cooper is a rich case study for the simultaneous transgression and policing of all kinds of American cultural norms – and I especially appreciate your take on how his “outing” contributes to that.
