I very much second your conclusion – and to understand Fox News we need to spend more time studying its audience and, indeed, fans.

Rating results from election night coverage: NBC wins the 8-11 p.m. time slot with 12.1 million viewers, claiming it a “resounding victory” for the network because its reporting is “grounded in accurate journalism.” Fox News came in second with 11.5 million, beating broadcast networks ABC by 2 million and CBS 3.6 million. As the NYTimes wrote, “Fox News had 10.1 million viewers in the 11 p.m. hour, when it named Obama the winner, but just 2.7 million viewers in the 1 a.m. hour. CNN, on the other hand, had 10.7 million viewers at 11 p.m. and 8.2 million at 1 a.m.” One has to be careful with the interpretations and inferences one makes from such data (Fox viewers are older, for instance), but that somewhat captures my point nicely.

But it can pushed even a bit further when you think about how Wrigley and Fenway are promoted a arenas of living, palpable nostalgia for a “better times” when America was “American”.

That said I think this whole Cubs/Sox thing should be avoided. Much too volatile as it fractures families and friendships alike.

Go Sox.
