What was “Kitty Karry-all” thinking would have made a much richer, campier, and inappropriately naughty premise than Carol!

I have 5 kids who have been watching Nick Jr for years.and I have always relied on this channel to provide educational programming. I am far from a prude and I find Nickmom to be offensive and this channel would be the last one I would view for mommy relief! there are many other channels that can do that, but there are few for preschoolers! I too have tolerated the other changes to the programming, when they took off “face” the big yellow smiley face that talked to the kids, much like moose and zee and when they took off moose and
zee; even when they took off the upside down show, my son’s favorite show. but come on… this had gone too far. I hope they restore their regular programming soon! we have stopped watching NickJr.

This spring, without notice, they got rid of the beloved host characters Moose and Zee, whom parents loved as much as kids for their quirky songs. At that same time, without notice, the did away with many older shows such as Little Bill, YoGaBaGaba, and Franklin which were still favorites of preschoolers like mine. In their place Nick just ran back to back episodes of Dora and Deigo as well as pumping up commercials times. Nick Jr did bring back these shows after sometime and numerous complaints but didn’t bring back Moose and Zee. Many parents were upset about the way Nick jr handled the changes this spring so when Nick Jr then tried to change things up this fall with NickMom I think parents were feeling the same way they did in the spring. That, without notice and without audience input, Nick jr made drastic changes to a staple in their child’s life.

Particularly since, in both cases, the audience was technically the same–though, of course, the students & Gen-Xers were watching all the programming, and moms aren’t watching Nick Jr. so much as overseeing its consumption. It is very interesting to consider what makes the two cases so similar and yet so different.

NickMom’s irreverent spin on Nick Jr. reminds me of Adult Swim, which, particularly when it first launched, existed in similar tension with Cartoon Network. But since a significant chunk of CN’s viewership seemed to be college students and nostalgic gen-Xers anyway, AS became hugely successful in adopting this pose. It’s interesting to see this play out in this differently gendered (and classed and aged) sphere with somewhat less success.
