I’m on Android for mobile, and have used Podkicker for all my podcasts. I’ve only had issues with a couple of them (one of them being the original Aca-Media format), but otherwise it’s been smooth as glass. Does take probably a bit more hands-on file management than say iTunes, but it’s easy and painless.

I like Downcast, and Podcruncher support was very helpful–so I can recommend both of them to podcast newbies out there. Podcasts are great to listen to in the car, while working out, doing housework–yes, I’m talking to you, you time-crunched academic!

I enjoyed the Aca-Media podcast–and I hope this conversational style of academic discourse blooms and grows. A conversation/interview is often more engaging than a straightforward report or the recitation of a conference paper. And as Christine Becker points out in the podcast, there are a lot of pent up conversations out there in social media (Twitterverse, FB) that deserve a longform platform.

Kudos!

Sorry for the slow response. Downcast is usually the consensus choice for iOS; I personally use iCatcher (http://joeisanerd.com/apps/icatcher) but that’s just because I heard of it first and am happy with it. But anything is better than the Apple Podcasts app. For what it’s worth, if I were ever to switch from iCatcher for some reason, my next stop would be Downcast, so it sounds like you’ve already found a good option.

Re the technical end of things: our first episode went out as an AAC file, which caused problems for some applications, so we’re switching to good old-fashioned mp3s, just like our fathers’ fathers. Please let me know if you run into any problems. And thanks for listening!

I’m about to listen to the first podcast, but first, a technical question for you. Which podcast app do you recommend? I have been frustrated by several podcast apps (and won’t use iTunes anymore!). The Apple Podcasts app is problematic; Podcruncher wouldn’t download the episode; so now I’m trying Downcast. Having an easy to use podcast app on my phone definitely increases my podcast consumption–so, help us all and give us your sage podcasting advice! Thanks!
