Perhaps it was his youthful ambition to rise to greatness that powered those early years, but something happened to him after he achieved success and moved to CBS. When Letterman makes headlines now, it is due more to awkward edgy moments rather than the brilliant comedy bits that made him famous in the first place.

A key point you make worth emphasizing is Letterman’s adroit usage of repetition. He wore out Stevie Nicks and Madonna with that technique, but perhaps more powerfully (or at least meaningfully) with John McCain. He is probably the best talk show host in using this technique, and “shaming” is certainly the right word for its potential effect.
