Granted, that precedent involved: (a) an established American star; and (b) the promotional backing of Disney, but “Avonlea” is perhaps as explicitly Canadian of an import as has ever existed.

But, IMO, one of them is that it is one of the smartest shows on TV.

I hope they do not think that only big TV Channels deserve to be watched or American actresses only. I really hope that they notice real talent. It does not matter if the actress is from a small show (awesome show I have to say). It does not matter if she is from another country. What it really matters is that Tatiana is showing the best performance in televison this year. No one, and I mean really no one, deserves this statue more than her. Not only a nomination, but the award.

Orphan Black is co-produced by BBC America, which is considered American, so it’s in.

This is also why Downton Abbey’s eligible (like many but not all of PBS’s “British” shows, it’s co-produced by Masterpiece) but Doctor Who isn’t (BBC America doesn’t produce it).

Helpful in reminding me that the Peabody Awards are not like anything you are describing here. I’ll know we are doomed when I see airplanes hauling banners over Athens skies.
