Where do you see American folks congratulating themselves for, essentially, not being Russia? And where do you see such attitudes resulting in an avoidance of “truly tough questions” about America? I’d argue that a self-congratulatory discourse of US exceptionalism is a default in the American mainstream media, with or without a Russian bogeyman (or crazy uncle).
